The Philadelphia Eagles acquired quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, positioning the veteran as a backup to starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Dalton, 37, spent the last two seasons with the Panthers, primarily backing up Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.[1] In 2024, Dalton started three games for Carolina under head coach Dave Canales, posting a 1-2 record before suffering a fractured clavicle.[2][1]
Prior to joining Carolina in November 2023, Dalton started nine seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2019, compiling a 70-61-2 regular-season record with four consecutive playoff appearances from 2011 to 2014 but no postseason wins.[1]
Following his trade from Cincinnati in March 2020, Dalton started four games for the Dallas Cowboys that year (2-2 record) and 10 games for the Chicago Bears in 2021.[1] He signed with the New Orleans Saints in March 2022 but was released before the season and did not appear in any games that year.[1]
The Eagles' previous primary backup was Tanner McKee, an undrafted free agent from Stanford who spent 2023 on the practice squad and showed promise in 2024 preseason action.[3]
Hurts, 26, has started for Philadelphia since 2020 and led the team to Super Bowl LVII in 2023.[3]
