NFL and referees' association continue negotiations on collective bargaining agreement

The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA), which represents 121 game officials, remain in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement set to expire on May 31, 2026.[1][2]

The current seven-year deal, ratified in 2019, covers the 2020 through 2025 seasons.[1][2] Talks have included discussions on performance standards and accountability measures proposed by the league.[3]

Reports indicate the NFL is preparing contingency plans for replacement officials if no deal is reached before the 2026 season begins in early September.[4][5] ESPN cited internal emails showing the league has started laying the groundwork for such a scenario.[5]

The possibility of replacements evokes the 2012 lockout, when non-union officials from Division III colleges, high schools, and developmental leagues officiated Weeks 1-3.[6][7] The period ended with a new agreement on September 27, 2012, after controversy peaked with the "Fail Mary" play—a disputed touchdown on a Hail Mary pass that gave the Seattle Seahawks a 14-12 win over the Green Bay Packers on September 24, 2012.[6][7]

ESPN analyst Pat McAfee, a former Indianapolis Colts punter who played from 2007-2012, voiced opposition on X (formerly Twitter) to using replacement referees again.[8] McAfee highlighted issues from 2012 and called for officials accountable to the game's integrity.[8]

The NFL has stated it aims to improve officiating through higher performance standards and assigning top officials to marquee games.[3]
