Florida Gators' tallest player Olivier Rioux announces transfer from program

Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-8 center for the University of Florida men's basketball team, has announced he will transfer out of the program ahead of next season. The 20-year-old Canadian from Terrebonne, Quebec, made the decision public in an Instagram post, thanking coaches, staff, teammates and fans for his time with the Gators.[1][2]

Rioux joined the Florida Gators in 2024 after playing at IMG Academy in Florida. Listed at 7-foot-8 on the official roster, he is recognized as the tallest player in NCAA Division I men's basketball history, surpassing Britain's Paul Sturgess at 7-foot-7.25 inches.[2][3][4]

The Gators compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Rioux has seen limited playing time during the 2024-25 season, appearing in four games for a total of eight minutes with two points and three rebounds through early December.[2][5]

Florida coach Todd Golden leads the program from the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida. Rioux's departure is expected to reduce the average height of the Gators' roster for the 2025-26 season.[2][6]

Rioux stands taller than former NBA players Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol, both at 7-foot-7, and exceeds Yao Ming's listed height of 7-foot-6.[3][4]
