Judge Sidelined Indefinitely After Stress Fracture Diagnosis Clouds Yankees' Postseason Picture
The New York Yankees announced late Thursday that Aaron Judge has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side, placing the right fielder and reigning American League MVP on the injured list with no fixed return date. The club said Judge will be re-evaluated in approximately four to six weeks, and the organization confirmed he is expected to return at some point during the 2026 season.
Judge's absence had been unannounced before Tuesday's game, when he was held out of the lineup without explanation. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wednesday that additional imaging had been ordered to identify the precise nature of the injury. "He's going back for some more imaging," Boone said. "They just want to get some more specific spots, and so we'll have more on that later." He added: "We just want clarity on what we're exactly dealing with. Then we can set the course of action and kind of have an idea what the timeline is going to be." Thursday's diagnosis provided that clarity.
Before the injury became public, Judge had shown signs of a relative slump by his own standards in May, posting an .805 OPS - a figure that would represent a productive season for most major-league hitters but falls below the elite levels he established in prior campaigns. The timing of his physical decline now appears consistent with the stress fracture. Through the first third of the 2026 season, the Yankees had drawn strong contributions from first baseman Ben Rice, right-hander Gerrit Cole - returning to a major-league mound for the first time since 2024 - reliever Cam Schlitter, and outfielder Cody Bellinger in his second year with the club.
New York enters the injury with a favorable position in a competitive American League landscape, though the Tampa Bay Rays hold first place in the AL East. A prolonged absence from Judge could cost the Yankees the division title and, with it, a potential first-round postseason bye. Should the fracture fail to heal as projected, the injury carries the risk of becoming season-ending. If Judge does return before October, however, the Yankees' profile as a legitimate World Series contender is restored. A re-evaluation in four to six weeks will be the first significant marker in determining that outcome.
