NFL advances international expansion with confirmed Australia partnership for 2026

The NFL announced a multi-year partnership with Melbourne & Olympic Parks in March 2024, targeting a regular-season game at Marvel Stadium in 2026, which would mark the league's first in Australia.[1][2]

The agreement positions Marvel Stadium, which has a capacity of 53,359 and hosted gridiron exhibition games previously, as the venue for the debut.[1] The timing would align U.S. primetime with early morning local time in Melbourne to maximize viewership.[2]

This potential game aligns with the NFL's broader global strategy. The league played five regular-season games abroad during the 2024 season: one in Sao Paulo, Brazil (Philadelphia Eagles defeated Green Bay Packers 34-29 on September 6), three in London, England, and one in Munich, Germany.[3][4]

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has stated the league aims to play eight international games in the 2025 season, building toward up to 10 per year as infrastructure and fan interest grow.[5]

Players have mixed views on the expansion. Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl left tackle Dion Dawkins has highlighted player workload concerns in discussions around an expanded regular season.[6]

Sports agent Leigh Steinberg told Fox News Digital that while players appreciate experiencing new cultures, long-haul flights—such as 12-14 hours from the U.S. West Coast to London—impose a physical toll and disrupt routines.[7]

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton, speaking on ESPN's "First Take," endorsed the business logic, comparing it to the NBA's global model and noting flag football's role in broadening accessibility worldwide.[8]

The NFL International Series began in 2007 with a game at Wembley Stadium. To date, 35 regular-season games have been played outside the U.S., primarily in London (32 games).[9]
