Romero Skips Tottenham Relegation Clash For Argentine Title Decider
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero will miss the Premier League match against Everton as he travels to Argentina to watch his former club Belgrano contest the league championship final against River Plate.
The 28-year-old defender has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury in a match against Sunderland. He had remained visible on the touchline during recent games but chose to return home for the decisive fixture involving the club where he began his career in 2014.
Belgrano have never won the Argentine league title and face River Plate, who hold the competition record for most titles won. The match carries added weight because the two clubs last met in a playoff that sent River Plate down 15 years ago.
Tottenham’s survival depends on the result at Everton. A win secures their place in the top flight, while a draw would also suffice given their superior goal difference over West Ham United.
